Captain's Log
24 September 2010

Ahoy there everyone,A well deserved nights rest at anchor was had by all. I guarantee everyone onboard slept very soundly and for good reason, most were exhausted from Command Day. The ship weighed anchor at 0800 departing Hunters Bay, Sydney Harbour and motored to Fleet Base East, Woolloomooloo berthing alongside at 0900 and embarked our half day sail guests from NSW Muscular Dystrophy.Once welcomes were complete the ship departed the wharf at 1000 and Young Endeavour proceeded into Sydney Harbour where we hosted our guests under sail for a three hour experience onboard. This enabled them to observe the recently acquired deck work and climbing skills of the Youth Crew. The ship then returned alongside Fleet Base East at 1300 where the half day sail guests were farewelled. After a short break the Youth Crew lay aloft on the yards to put harbour furls on all the square sails. Once complete we sailed from our berth and proceeded to our overnight anchorage at Athol Bay opposite Taronga Zoo.Our last night together on Young Endeavour consisted of a sunset ‘teak deck BBQ’, song and slide show on the upper deck capturing various moments and experiences during the voyage. This gave everyone the opportunity to reflect on the past 10 days and their amazing once in a life time journey. The remainder of the evening was spent with the Youth Crew completing end of voyage questionnaires and “letters to themselves”, which are returned to each Youth Crew member six months after voyage completion.Tomorrow morning, Young Endeavour will weigh anchor, transit the short distance to Fleet Base East, yards fully manned, with our accomplished young adventurers, where we will say our final farewell to the Youth Crew of Voyage 17/10. It has been a magnificent journey and one not to be forgotten. The ship will remain in Sydney conducting a maintenance period until 26th October 2010 when she will embark the next Youth Crew for Voyage 18-10, Sydney to Williamstown.Until then it has been an honour and privilege to sail with the Youth and Staff Crew of Voyage 17/10. I wish them all the best for their future endeavours.Yours ayeCaptain Damien
