Day 1 – Voyage 10-16 Underway
Hi Everyone,
Welcome to Young Endeavours fourth voyage of our 2016 Circumnavigation of Australia. This voyage will see us sail from Gladstone to Airlie Beach which is only just over 300nm but what a fantastic stretch of Australian Coastline to sail.
The Young Endeavour Staff Crew for this voyage are as follows:

The voyage commenced at 1500 this afternoon when the new Youth Crew joined Young Endeavour berthed alongside at the Gladstone’s Marina Service Wharf. Once onboard and all gear stowed, everyone mustered on deck for my welcome address and Staff Crew introductions. On completion we farewelled family and friends then made preparations to get underway. Given that all the Youth Crew had arrived on time we managed to depart early at 1545 and given that this was Sail Master Taffy’s second last voyage I let him take the ship off the berth and manoeuvre us out of the Marina which he did extremely well.
Once clear of the marina we shaped a course to the east and then conducted our 6nm passage to our planned anchorage at Quion No 1 coming safely to anchor at 1620. During this passage the Watch Leaders conducted some ‘ice breaker’ activities and tours of the ship. Dinner followed with Chef Jenko impressing everyone with the first of many great meals that he will cook for us throughout this voyage.
Once we had cleaned up from dinner the Youth Crew were again mustered up on deck where Taffy and I conducted Captains and Sail Master Chats and once completed commenced some deck safety with their respective Watch Leaders. Normally on completion of these activities we would go straight into first night climbs but given the distance that most of the Youth Crew have had to travel today to get to Gladstone we have decided to defer these climbs until tomorrow morning ensuring that the Youth Crew will be well rested prior to undertaking this activity.
Given the current weather forecast it is our intention to remain at anchor here in Gladstone Harbour overnight then weigh anchor early tomorrow afternoon, conduct our pilotage out of Gladstone Harbour then shape a course to the ENE.

Ahoy followers of our Young Endeavour journey! Command Day. We made it.
The beautiful weather at our anchor point at Jervis Bay made for a spectacular day under the command of our fellow Youth Crew! A morning stretch and some wise words from the Ship Crew gave Captain Waz and the team a step in the right direction.
With the new watches all set and ready to go, Captain’s Setting and Furling gave all our youthies the chance to prove their abilities on the high seas. Strong performances from all three watches; Sharkies, Chompers and Narwhals!!
Morning brief gave the Sailmaster a chance to give us the daily orders and help get everyone on the same page. With the staff crew getting ready for a holiday and giving us the ship, floral shirts and party music filled the deck and, with some final preparations, the ship was ours.
The Captain was given a small but very significant envelope that contained the essential, non-essential and completely optional tasks to be done over the course of the next 24 hours. 2 tacks were to be made at a minimum before leaving the bay and safety checks were the essential tasks to start our journey. However.
More amusing, optional tasks allowed some of our youthies to become part of the “Beach Assault Team” while others were put to the task of making a slideshow of the voyage, tying all the knots on the list, etc. These were some activities that bided the time for our incredible navigator - Ruscoe to set out a plan and work together with the Sailmaster - Hugh to create a sail plan.
Tacking stations were the focus for our late afternoon, preparing to weigh anchor and leave such a beautiful bay, for our last stretch of this incredible voyage.
Happy Birthday to the Capitan, Warwick, who turned 24 today! The wonderful MasterChef’s created a “cherry ripe” cake out of rice crispies, coconut, chocolate, and love. With a beautiful ceremony to end our day.
Sailing into the night leaves us the ability to see the lights from our destination. Sydney, here we come!
