Day 1 – Eden

Ahoy there everyone,I hope everyone enjoyed a fantastic Christmas and New Year. Welcome to Young Endeavour’s second voyage for 2012, our journey commenced today in Eden and concludes in Sydney. To facilitate our adventure under sail, it is an honour to introduce the eleven Staff Crew that will guide and shape our voyage during the next 11 days: Captain Damien Sail Master Kim Navigator Kristy-Lee Watch Officers Matt Red Watch Leaders Dougie White Watch Leader JB and Komo Blue Watch Leader Carly and Luke Chef Squiz Engineer Mick The voyage officially commenced at 1500 today when 27 Youth Crew from across Australia embarked in Young Endeavour berthed at the Breakwater Wharf, Snug Cove. Once all possessions had been stowed below, all hands were mustered on deck for a welcome address and staff introductions before friends and family were emotionally farewelled. Then under the direction of their watch leaders, the Youth Crew conducted ship familiarisation and a number of introduction activities to integrate the members of each watch. Once completed the first of many very tasty meals crafted by master chef Squiz was consumed. After dinner, voyage expectations, requirements and safety aspects for the next 11 days onboard were discussed. Then without further ado, some nerves, a great deal of courage and a lot of determination every single member of our new crew proceeded aloft onto the foremast for their first night climb. The surrounding view of Twofold Bay from aloft was both inspiring and invigorating in the fresh winds. I am very pleased to report that all of the Youth Crew performed extremely well on their first day and I am from the outset impressed with both their individual efforts and team attitude. After having a celebratory hot chocolate followed by a 90 second shower, each has now turned in for a well deserved first night sleep in Young Endeavour. Tomorrow morning we will awake at 0630, before casting off all lines mid morning and commencing sail training for the day in Twofold Bay, then commence shaping a course north. Until tomorrow evening, take care. Yours Aye Captain Damien

Dear readers,
STS Young Endeavour is, by the definition and origin of her name, about Aussie youths trying hard to achieve something difficult. This voyage certainly provided that... and then some. A challenging experience from all angles and areas. Yet the Youth Crew prevailed and found success. They should therefore be justifiably proud of themselves for persevering, seeing the silver lining and never wavering in their mission to have a great adventure. I am very proud of all of them and I'm sure you are too!
9 Days ago 23 Youth Crew from all over Australia, came together to sail this vessel, have fun and challenge themselves. They have not only done that, but have faced and overcome fears, and learnt a lot about themselves and each other.
They leave with new skills, improved persistence, resilience and adaptability, as well as generally knowing they are more capable than what they probably thought. And of course, having made great new friends - most probably, friends for life. It never gets old for us staff members, as we truly love our work.
Fair winds and following seas.
