Day 1 – A Cold and Windy Hobart
Ahoy shipmates…and a Happy New Year to you all! Greetings from a rather cool and windy Hobart. After completing our Sydney to Hobart duties we have spent the last few days at anchor in Sandy Bay, just off the Wrest Point Casino, enjoying everything Hobart has to offer…New Year’s Eve, Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race festivities, and the Taste of Tasmania. But it’s time to go sailing again, and we now get to explore more of Tassie with a 12 day Hobart to Hobart voyage…very cool. To that end, at 1500 this afternoon, in very blustery conditions (SW winds at 35+ knots), 27 young adventurers joined us by boat transfer from the Royal Tasmanian Yacht Club. Unfortunately due to the conditions, friends and family were not able to join us, for as soon as the youth crew were embarked we weighed anchor and headed down the Derwent in search of a more sheltered anchorage, settling on our current location under the lee of the Alum Cliffs, just north of Kingston Beach. En route the youth crew took some time to get to know their fellow watch members, unpack and take quick tours of the ship. After a delicious dinner from chefs Adam and Keely (yes we have two for this voyage), we all gathered at midships for introductions, followed by briefs from the Engineer (fixer of broken things), the chefs and medics (fixers of food and humans), the Sailmaster (do’s and don’ts) and Captain (program and motivation). We always enjoy the Hobart to Hobart voyages…plenty of options as to where we go and no great distances needing to be covered. Tomorrow we’ll explore the D’Entrecasteaux Channel, heading up towards Huon, before rounding the southern tip of Bruny Island and crossing Storm Bay en route Maria. The weather forecast is looking good for some square sail action as we introduce the youth crew to life on a tall ship…promises to be fun. As I write the youth crew are wrapping up night one with their watch leaders before heading to their racks for some much needed sleep in preparation for a busy day 2. Until tomorrow, fair winds, Captain Kenny.
P.S. Staff crew for Voyage 01/20…Captain-Kenny, Sailmaster-Aaron, Navigator-Darren, Watch Officer-Ian, White Watch Leader-Ivanka, Red Watch Leader-Reggie, Blue Watch Leader-Keith, Engineer-Ben, Chefs-Adam and Keely.

Thank you Tarvi, Kaeden and Matt for your narrative of today's events. Intentions are to remain at anchor in Hunters Bay, just off HMAS Penguin, home of the RAN Diving School, a place close to my heart, having spent many a day there under training as a young Officer! The plan is to weigh anchor and proceed to HMAS Waterhen, in Waverton, to pick up our Community Day Sailors from the Windgap Foundation and take them for a sail around the harbour for 3 hours. The Youth Crew will help us host our visitors and give them an experience of Young Endeavour. We will drop them back to Waverton and then proceed to anchor in the harbour where we will have a good view of the Bridge and the Opera House for the Youth Crew's last night onboard. Until tomorrow. Yours Aye, Captain Mike
