Day 05 – V11/25, Darwin to Broome

Today started off in good spirits due to a combination of finally being at anchor and the closer connections from three-way chats last night. Not only did being at anchor mean calmer seas and fully purged land-demons, but it also gave us our first anchor-watch experiences and longer sleep. Rising to the sound of Pirates of the Caribbean and the smell of Steve’s delicious egg and bacon toasties, we were prepared for a swash-buckling adventure!
White Watch were quick to get away, embarking in the dinghies right after brekkie at 0730 hours. Red watch recovered from their luxury river cruise from the day before by playing games and having personal downtime. Meanwhile, Blue Watch-Leader TJ upped the stakes of learning the ropes by using the forestaysail lines as a hammock, necessitating the accuracy of our ‘bus driver turns’.
Having deposited White Watch in the timeless beauty of King George Sound, the dinghies returned at 1015 to pick up us Blueys eager for our turn. Passing through the towering sandstone cliffs that form a majestic entrance to the Kimberleys, we were welcomed by turtles, a dugong, and crocs (safely from a distance, promise mum).
Battered from the meters-high waves and covered in salt, the twin waterfalls were a sight for sore eyes, and as we got closer the sound of rushing water filled our ears until it was all we could hear. Still the dinghies neared closer and closer to waterfall, fresh-water spray spitting in our faces, and finally we were drenched by the force that for 400 million years had eroded the stone surrounding us. Following the footsteps of the two previous watches, we hiked up the collapsed cliff-face and enjoyed a break swimming in the natural pools.
Welcomed back on deck by showers and promises of banana bread (courtesy of White Watch), the youthies settled in for dinner (props to Steve) with ice-cream and a beautiful sunset. As we finish writing this, the crew have weighed the anchor and we are beginning to set sail to our next destination, the calls of ‘2, 6, heave!’ resounding around the deck.
See you in 9 days,
