35° 25' South
136° 52' East
Currently located in the Investigator Strait and are experiencing very light SE winds with nil swell.
Following a good nights sleep at anchor it was an extremely warm morning that greeted the Crew of Young Endeavour, with temperatures for the day forecast to peak in the high 30's. On completion of colours the RHIB (ships boat) was recovered, anchor weighed and we departed Boston Bay under engines. Once in open water we shaped a new course to the south east and commenced our passage across the Spencer Gulf. Again the winds were light and variable which meant that we had to continue to utilise main engines. Late morning saw the Youth Crew complete Captains setting and furling drills, which is were I evaluate each of the watches in sail setting and furling in preparation for Command Day. The wind freshened from the north west during the afternoon and we were able to set the squares for a short period of time before the wind again moderated to less than 8kts and we were again forced to use engines. Late this afternoon I presented my Command Day brief which was closely followed by Command Day elections.
The time is now 2000 and we have just rounded althorpe Island and entered the Investigator Strait, escorted by a playful group of dolphins who are thoroughly enjoying our bow wave. Overnight we will continue to make ground to Kingscote, which is located on Kangaroo Island and is were we plan to anchor by 0800 tomorrow morning.
At 1000 tomorrow I will hand Young Endeavour over to the Youth Crew of Voyage 17-09 who will have command of the ship for what will be a challenging 24hr period.
Until tomorrow, take care
