Day 6 – Port Arthur

Hi Everyone, Welcome to Day 6 of our voyage. Throughout last night and during the early hours of this morning we had to motor sail as the wind remained light and variable. Adding to this lack of wind was a 2m SE swell which made conditions quite uncomfortable. Surprisingly, in these conditions all signs of seasickness that had been experienced just 48hrs previously had disappeared as all of the Returnees have wnow well and truly gained there ‘sea legs’. By morning brief this morning we had reached the entry to Port Arthur and following a short pilotage we came safely to anchor just of the main convict settlement at 0900. Once at anchor the Returnees were ferried ashore where they were given the opportunity to take a guided historical tour around the convict prison and settlement, or enjoy a good coffee up at the tourist centre restaurant.. By 1330 everyone was back onboard and following a short break the anchor was weighed and we departed Port Arthur. Once back in Storm Bay a forecasted wind shift to the SW occurred which enabled the ship to be brought under fore and aft sail and a course shaped for the Derwent River. During the next couple of hours in very wet conditions we made good speed and by 1815 we had passed Iron Pot which is the entry Derwent River. Once in the river all sail was handed in and we proceeded up the river to Sandy Bay were we anchored just to the NE of the Hobart Casino at 2000. Once at anchor the Returnees and Staff mustered in the ships café to watch a fantastic slide show of photographs taken of the voyage which gave everyone the opportunity to reflect on how special the past 6 days has been. On completion of this show we reverted to anchor watches for the night ensuring that everyone onboard gets a well deserved good nights rest. Until Tomorrow, take care. Yours Aye Captain Gav
