Day 5 – Montebello Islands
Hi Everyone,Welcome to day 5 of our voyage. By Sunrise this morning we were located 21nm to the north east of the Montebello Islands still motor sailing in extremely light conditions.Following a short morning brief and a quick set of cleaning stations (which was slightly interrupted with the sighting of a couple of humpback whales) the ship came safely to anchor at the northern point of Trimouille Island. For those of you unfamiliar with Trimoulle Island it is the largest of the Montebello Islands and is home to a vast array of marine and wildlife, including Loggerhead Turtles, Dolphins, migrating Humpback Whales and Ospreys, which is amazing considering it was used as a nuclear testing site back in 1959. Thankfully this island like the rest of the Montebello Islands is now a marine national park.Once at anchor the Youth Crew were ferried ashore where they were given just over an hour to have a leg stretch and explore this part of this remote and uninhabited island before returning to the ship for lunch.Early this afternoon we weighed anchor then transited the short 4nm down to the south of the island to Benedictine Bay and the beautiful Vodka Beach. Here we spent 3hrs ashore snorkelling with an abundance of marine life, playing beach sports and exploring a predominately uninhabited island. Everyone had a wonderful time but all too soon the sun was going down and it was time to return to the ship.Early this evening, with everyone safely back onboard we enjoyed our first teak deck BBQ for the voyage which is now being followed by a movie shown on our big screen under stars.Once completed, a very weary Youth Crew will settle into anchor watches overnight ensuring that they are well rested for the days ahead. Until tomorrow, take care. Yours Aye Captain Gav Shout OutsTo David and Eileen ParkerCongratulations on your marriage!!! thinking of you. Thank you Tarvi, Kaeden and Matt for your narrative of today's events. Intentions are to remain at anchor in Hunters Bay, just off HMAS Penguin, home of the RAN Diving School, a place close to my heart, having spent many a day there under training as a young Officer! The plan is to weigh anchor and proceed to HMAS Waterhen, in Waverton, to pick up our Community Day Sailors from the Windgap Foundation and take them for a sail around the harbour for 3 hours. The Youth Crew will help us host our visitors and give them an experience of Young Endeavour. We will drop them back to Waverton and then proceed to anchor in the harbour where we will have a good view of the Bridge and the Opera House for the Youth Crew's last night onboard. Until tomorrow. Yours Aye, Captain Mike
