Day 3 – Cape Otway

Hi Everyone, Welcome to Day 3 of our voyage. Overnight we continued to make good speed to the south and despite a number of the Youth Crew succumbing to the dreaded sailors curse of ‘seasickness’ spirits amongst the crew remain high. By 0900 this morning we were located 20nm to the north east of Cape Otway motor sailing close hauled under a reduced fore and aft sail plan due to the light and variable conditions. Throughout the day we continued with the training program and kept the Youth Crew busy with a number of activities which included introducing them to their first set of ‘Rope Races’. This activity helps the Youth Crew to learn the many line, sails, parts of rigging and safety equipment that are located onboard Young Endeavour and is run by Lindsey the Engineer (I believe that Watch Leader Luke’s Blue Watch won this event today with the other two watches not far behind). Following ‘Rope Races’ our resident Navigator Miquela spent time with each of the watches and gave a presentation on the scientific art of navigation. This theory will be put into practice over the next few days with the Youth Crew learning how to navigate the ship utilising different methods such as GPS, radar and coastal positional fixing. Early that afternoon, the wind backed and freshened from the south west which enabled us to shut down main engines and set all fore and aft sail. This has now enabled us to round Cape Otway, and we are now making ground along the Western Victorian coast. Our current intentions are to remain at sea overnight and for the Youth Crew to continue to develop their sailing and navigation skills. Highlights for today have been sightings of a pod of dolphins, a whale and one lonesome seal. Until tomorrow, take care Yours Aye Captain Gav
