Day 18 – Light Winds

Hi Everyone,                  Welcome to day 18 of our voyage. For most of yesterday in wind strengths of 20-25kts we maintained a good boat speed of 8-9kts but come the First Watch (2000-2359) with myself on the helm the wind died. Yes here we are in the Southern Ocean and no wind. My only option was to turn on main engines and motor sail once again which we are still doing 24hrs later. The good news is that we are due for a south westerly change sometime tomorrow morning so hopefully it won\’t be to long before we are back under a full press of sail making good speed once again. As has become the normal routine I have asked one of the Crew to write the Log for tonight, as I think that it is important that you hear about experiences onboard first hand from the Crew and not just from myself. Tonight\’s Log has been written by Blue Watch\’s Sam, please enjoy.Until tomorrow, take careYours AyeCaptain Gav             Captain’s LogHello to everyone at home and abroad from the mighty Blue Watch (Shannon, Grace, Julia, Connie, Sam, Liam, Tito, Catlin, Engineer Shaun and Watch Leader Jodie). Today started early for us with a 0400-0800 watch with officer of the watch Kenny.First up for the mighty Blueys was a climb up the foremast to watch an epic sunrise over the Southern Ocean which put on a feast for the eyes. After a great start, we went straight into an exercise called “Apples and Onions”, during which all Watch Members write good things (apples) and constructive criticisms (onions) about each other. The aim of the exercise is personal development and one which bears lots of fruit for all those involved and it is a great tool as we form closer bonds with those around us.After “Apples and Onions” and to close out our watch we performed a sea furl on the topsail and course which was fun, as always. Following on from our watch we went through the daily routine of morning brief and Happy-happy-happy hour and were given the rest of the day off to relax and make the most of the calm, sunny and warm conditions which we are currently experiencing. All made the most of the day and spent it chilling out at midships basking in the sun for all its glory. Unfortunately, with the nicer conditions they bring with them a lack of wind so we are currently using the iron sail to propel us along. It is currently 1800 and along with another excellent and insightful sail theory brief from Captain Gav, we have just finished a game of trivia and are cycling through another one of Aarons marvellous feast’s along with getting ready for our watches over night. It has been another epic day on the high seas for both the Deck Apes and Staff Crew alike.Yours Aye,Blue Watch (Sam)”
