Day 14 – Fitzroy Harbour, Great Barrier Island
Ahoy there shipmates,Sail Master Matt woke the crew at 0745, allowing everyone a sleep-in after a long and physical day yesterday.Morning brief was held at 0900, then Happy Hour. It was decided to give the crew some free time so the rest of the morning was devoted to organising a ‘Thank you’ photo for the Ship from the Youth Crew after which people had time to relax, do some washing etc. After a late lunch Spirit of NZ brought their lugger sailing boats over to enable us to get some practice before the regatta planned for the afternoon. At 1400 most of the crew were ferried to Spirit by boat and the sailing competition began. I like to think the results, Australia 1 to NZ 3, was a reflection of the Kiwis’ knowledge of sailing the luggers rather than the raw sailing ability. As much fun was had by everyone throwing and dodging water balloons as was had in the races. The Kiwis invited us to join them in a swim and rope swing before we returned onboard. We had a later than normal dinner at 1830 after which we screened ‘Top Gun’ for those who didn’t feel they needed an early night. It is intended to remain at anchor here again overnight and sail in the morning in company with Spirit, Europa, Picton Castle and Oosterschelde in preparation for entering Auckland Harbour on Friday.Yours AyeCaptain Mike   “Â

Thank you Tarvi, Kaeden and Matt for your narrative of today's events. Intentions are to remain at anchor in Hunters Bay, just off HMAS Penguin, home of the RAN Diving School, a place close to my heart, having spent many a day there under training as a young Officer! The plan is to weigh anchor and proceed to HMAS Waterhen, in Waverton, to pick up our Community Day Sailors from the Windgap Foundation and take them for a sail around the harbour for 3 hours. The Youth Crew will help us host our visitors and give them an experience of Young Endeavour. We will drop them back to Waverton and then proceed to anchor in the harbour where we will have a good view of the Bridge and the Opera House for the Youth Crew's last night onboard. Until tomorrow. Yours Aye, Captain Mike
