Day 10: Half Day Sail and Voyage Conclusion

Hi there Everyone,A good and well deserved nights rest at anchor was had by all. I think everyone onboard slept very soundly and for good reason, most were exhausted. When we awoke this morning the forecast was again for thunder storms and weather of a generally less than favourable nature. Being seasoned campaigners at dealing with this, we went about our business as usual. On completion of breakfast and morning brief it was straight into a deck wash down and cleaning stations in preparation for our Half Day Sail. We weighed anchor and proceeded down the harbour to our berth in Woolloomooloo. At 0945 guests from Ronald McDonald House embarked, along with a number of family and friends. Following a short welcome and safety brief the ship slipped and commenced a three hour cruise within the confines of Sydney Harbour. Despite the forecast and an overcast beginning, the sun was soon shining and all of our guests had a wonderful day, thoroughly enjoying the whole Young Endeavour Experience. The ship returned alongside at Garden Island at 1300 and following a brief farewell our guests disembarked. The Youth Crew were the perfect hosts and showed off all of the skills they had gained over the previous 10 days. All have indicated that they enjoyed the interaction with our guests and had a great time. After a short break we then lay aloft to put harbour furls on all of the square sails. On completion of these furls we sailed from our berth and proceeded to anchor in Athol Bay near Taronga Park Zoo. This was a deliberate act to set up for one of the most stunning back drops in Australia for our final night of the voyage. The Youth Crew then conducted their end of voyage talks’. This evening we opened the pool briefly for a very quick swim allowing people to cool down from a warm afternoons activity. We then rolled into the final teak deck BBQ’ of the voyage. This was done with a simply stunning outlook, the Sydney city skyline in the back ground, with Fort Denison, the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge in the foreground, on the youth of Australia’s tall ship, anchored in Sydney Harbour. Watching the sun set to the west behind this back drop was nothing short of magnificent. Then the lights of the aforementioned skyline put on a show of its own. It was brilliant! The evening was rounded out with a slide show up on deck capturing various moments and experiences during the voyage. This gave everyone the opportunity to reflect on the past 11 days and their amazing once in a life time journey. The rest of the evening was spent with the Youth Crew completing end of voyage questionnaires and letters to themselves, which are returned to each Youth Crew member six months after voyage completion. Whilst the Youth Crew were completing these final administration tasks the Staff Crew took the opportunity to conduct their end of voyage debriefs.Comment from a Youth Crew:Sam Today was absolutely amazing and the sun FINALLY came out for our last full day on the ship. The Ronald McDonald House guests were filled with smiles and the day was light hearted and filled with laughter. The slide show presentation made us all realise how close we’ve all become and how much we are going to miss each other! Shout out to the Syd crew!At 0900 tomorrow, Young Endeavour will weigh anchor and then transit a short distance with her yards fully manned, full of all our accomplished young adventurers. We will sail down past Fort Denison, give a big Young Endeavour wave as we pass the Prime Minister’s Sydney residence and then will sail under the remarkable structure of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. We will turn in the vicinity of Luna Park, return under the bridge and then sail across Circular Quay, past the spectacular Opera House and then finally berth. With our yards still fully manned, we will be met by a large group of family and friends as we berth at 1000 at Garden Island in Wolloomooloo. Following a brief ceremony we will say our final farewell to the Youth Crew of Voyage 03/10. It has been a magnificent journey and one not to be forgotten. This completes the third voyage of Young Endeavours 2010 program. The ship will remain in Sydney until Thursday 11 February when it will embark a new Youth Crew for Voyage 4-10, which is from Sydney to Williamstown. It’s been a pleasure. Until next time, take care.Yours AyeCaptain Dion Curtis
