Day 10 – Half Day Sail

Ahoy there everyone, A well deserved nights rest at anchor was had by all. I guarantee everyone onboard slept very soundly and for good reason, most were exhausted from Command Day. The ship weighed anchor at 0500 departing Kounungai, Moreton Island and made best speed under engines across Moreton Bay and into the Brisbane River where the ship berthed alongside Bullimba Barracks at 0900 and embarked our half day sail guests from Centacare.Once welcomes were complete the ship departed the wharf at 1000 and we set sail in very light conditions along the scenic Brisbane River. This enabled our guests the opportunity to observe the Youth Crew in action climbing, setting sail and listening to their singing prowess. After the scheduled three hours, the ship returned alongside Bullimba Barracks where our half day sail guests were farewelled with fond memories of both the ship and Youth Crew. There was no rest for our adventurers as they immediately conducted the final and penultimate round of rope races. Next the Youth Crew under the facilitation of their Watch Leaders conducted an end of voyage talks and debrief, discussing their individual goals and achievements during the previous 10 days. After this activity the Youth Crew lay aloft on the yards and put harbour furls on all the square sails in preparation for our last grand entry. Once completed our last teak deck BBQ was cooked and consumed in grandeur under the stars. The evening then culminated with a fantastic slide show on the upper deck capturing various moments and experiences during the voyage, this enabled everyone the opportunity to reflect on the past 10 days and their amazing once in a life time journey of adventure and discovery. The remainder of the evening was then spent with the Youth Crew completing end of voyage questionnaires and letters to themselves. These letters are returned to each Youth Crew member six months after the voyage completion, reminding each of their experience onboard and personal goals undertaken upon leaving the ship. Tomorrow morning, Young Endeavour will depart Bullimba Barracks and transit the short distance to Dockside Marina with her yards fully manned, by our accomplished young adventurers. Berthing at the Marina we will say our final farewell to the Youth Crew of Voyage 16/10. It has been a magnificent journey and one not to be forgotten by all.The ship will then remain in Brisbane until Wednesday 15th September 2010 when she will embark the next Youth Crew for Voyage 17-10, Brisbane to Sydney. Until then it has been an honour and privilege to sail with the Youth and Staff Crew of Voyage 16/10. I wish them all the best for their future endeavours and a reminder that they may leave Young Endeavour but Young Endeavour will never leave them. Yours ayeCaptain Damien
