Day 1 – Ahoy there shipmates!

Ahoy there shipmates, landlubbers and armchair sailors, welcome to Captain’s Log for Voyage 15/21. Off we go… go. ok. Well, I met the lovely youth crew of Voyage 15/21 today at HMAS Waterhen, and they look like a great bunch. 18 Aussie youths, from all over NSW, they embarked at 1500. After stowing their kit bags below deck, I made the welcome address, where I welcomed them onboard their ship and then introduced my skilled and experienced staff crew for this voyage… Namely: Sail Master – Kyle. Navigator – Tori. BOATSO – Emma. Red Watch Leader – Phoebe. White Watch Leader – Bobby. Blue Watch Leader – Keithy. Assistant Blue Watch Leader – Shaun. Chef – Jarod. Engineer – Reggie. Assistant Engineeer – Hoppy. The ship then departed Waterhen at 1600 and during the transit to our anchorage, Watch Leaders kicked off ice breakers and ships’ tours. Anchor was dropped in the gorgeous, Athol Bay just off the Zoo. You can even hear the monkeys from here… wait, no that was Emma! haha. Ahem, anyway a smashing anchorage, ladies and gents. Dinner was served shortly after 1700, and it was delectable my dear readers. Jarod the chef is off to a great start. Then at 1900, Reggie the Engineer spoke to the youthies of engines and plumbing and ships husbandry and the like. Kyle then spoke to them about their responsibilities and a few ‘guidelines’ to ensure communal harmony and unconditional positive regard for all. I spoke to them about what to expect over the next 10.5 days (time’s already ticking!) and ways to ensure maximum involvement in the program. Simply, to ‘get amongst it’, was the key. Youth crew then split into watches and commenced their seamanship training, consisting of line handling, deck safety and general principles. It’s going to be a big day tomorrow, and so our wonderful young crew turned in for a good nights sleep. Intention is to remain at anchor overnight, conducting first climbs in the forenoon and departing for sea after lunch. The adventure has begun… It’s going to be a fantastic voyage, I can feel it in my (salt) waters ;). Good night and stay safe. Captain Adam Charlie Farley+
