Cape Horn, Peking and Jerusalem

Ahoy there Shipmates, Overnight the ship continued on a beam reach taking advantage of the 20-30 knot westerlies to make a quick passage to Broken Bay. At 0700 we commenced the Captain’s Setting and Furling assessment of the Youth Crew by Watches. We had completed that by 0830 and then I gave the youthies my Captain’s Challenge, which was to hand-in all sail in preparation for us going to anchor in Broken Bay off Patonga. This task is our final preparation for them for Command Day. It is the first time they get to work together as a youth crew. They were required to plan and effect the handing-in of sail in the right sequence and also brace the yards and then sea-furl the main sail, once it had been brailed. The completed the task efficiently and safely. We anchored off Patonga at 0915 and then held Morning brief at 0930. On completion the youth crew did the usual ‘Happy Hour, which was followed by lunch. We put the youthies ashore at 1230 and gave them a chance to walk to a nearby lookout which afforded spectacular views of Broken Bay. The crew was back onboard by 1430 and, after we had recovered the boat, we weighed anchor and proceeded further into Broken Bay to Jerusalem Bay, which offered better protection from the westerlies and southerlies forecast for overnight. On the way the Watch Leaders took the opportunity to give the watches some more climbing practice and an opportunity to get a better view of the Ku-ring-gai National Park during our passage. Once at anchor Engineer Horto ran the next edition of ‘Ropies.’ Just before we had our BBQ dinner on deck, I briefed the youth crew on the aims and requirements of Command Day, which is planned to occur between 1300 tomorrow (Mon 18) and 1300 Tue 19. After we had cleaned-up from the BBQ, the youthies were then given 60 min to conduct their Command Day elections. On completion Youth Crew Captain Austin came to see me with the results. Congratulations to all members of the Youth Crew for what they have achieved in the Voyage so far and to those successful office holders for Command Day.After dinner we screened the film ‘Around Cape Horn’, which details the adventures of Captain Irving Johnson when he sailed as an ordinary seaman through storms around Cape Horn onboard the massive bark ‘Peking’. The intention is to remain in our current anchorage overnight and conduct the handover of the Ship to the Youth Crew at 1300 tomorrow. That will begin the adventure and challenge that is Command Day in Young Endeavour. Until tomorrow evening when we will also hear from Youth Captain Austin.  Yours Aye Captain Mike
