Currently located 22nm to the north of the town of 1770 sailing under fore & aft sail in moderate 8-12kt NE winds with nil swell. Our current speed is 5kts and the temperature is 17 degrees.
Welcome to Day 5 of our voyage. A well rested Youth Crew were awoken by Sail Master James at 0630 and mustered up on deck for an Early Morning Activity which on this occasion was a swim in the crystal clear water at our anchorage at Lady Musgrave Island, which by the way is my favourite way to start the day.
Following the normal early morning activities of breakfast, morning brief and cleaning stations, we weighed anchor and once in open water brought the ship under sail and completed a good set of rotational tacks. This activity gives the Youth Crew the opportunity to experience each others tacking station so they have a better understanding of how everything works when we tack the ship. On the final tack I initiated a Man Overboard Exercise (MOBEX) where I through a lifebuoy overboard (simulated person in the water) and we went through the processes of quickly handing in all sail and manoeuvring the ship around to conduct a recovery (happy to announce that the lifebuoy was fine). With this activity successfully completed we brought the ship back under sail, altered course to the northwest and continued our passage through the Barrier Reef.
Early this afternoon we conducted another set of Rope Races which was closely followed by my presentation on sail theory. To complete the afternoon’s activities Evan gave a very comprehensive brief on Rules of the Road then in freshening ENE conditions we brought the ship under a full press of sail for the first time for this voyage. The rest of the afternoon was spent sitting out on the bowsprit enjoying some great sailing and the wonderful experience of being at sea.
The time is now 2000 and we are currently located 22nm to the north of the township of 1770 sailing in moderate NE winds with nil swell. Overnight the Youth Crew will complete the BEAREX which is a teamwork and communication exercise while we continue to make good speed under sail to Great Keppel Island Is where we plan to anchor sometime tomorrow morning.
Until tomorrow, take care.
