Day 02 – V12/25, Broome to Exmouth
Day Two saw the ship start the day at anchor in Inner Broome Harbour at 0630H with an Early Morning Activity on the teak deck at sunrise. After a fun icebreaker activity we headed to the galley to see Kingy and have a big breakfast. The Youth Crew then conducted their first Colours ceremony at 0800H before finishing off some important briefs.
The Watchleaders took over and introduced deck safety concepts while the Ship's Crew prepared the ship to weigh anchor and proceed to berth at the Main Broome Wharf to top up fuel tanks and offload rubbish. Everything was executed smoothly and we left the wharf at 1300H and pointed our bows to the North West and started our journey.
It's been a big 18 hours onboard and everyone is feeling the pinch so we slowed down the late afternoon and had a rest before dinner. Kingy really is magician having cooked another delicious meal for us all. As the sun sets on our first night at sea we look towards the South West and dream of all the adventure between here and Exmouth in 10 days time.
The Youthies rolled into bridge watches overnight where they will be introduced to helming the ship, chartwork, rounds, setting and furling sails and having some fun as they learn all about their new home. Tomorrow night I will hand over to our crew to publish the Captains Log. Check back in to read all about it!

Day 01 – V12/25, Broome to Exmouth
This afternoon 22 Young Australians joined the ship for Voyage 12/25: Broome to Exmouth. STS Young Endeavour was at anchor in Broome Inner Harbour and we ferried our new adventurers and a handful of friends and loved ones onboard for the welcoming ceremony.
Our crew for this voyage is as follows; CO – Leups, SM – Sarah, OOW – Karsen, Chef – Kingy, Health Care Provider – Melwin, White Watch leader – TJ and Moony, Red Watch leader – Steve (AKA Big Sauce), Blue Watch Leader – Bec, Engineer – Dan and 2nd Engineer – Mark. We are excited to be setting sail for the NW coastline and making our way down to Exmouth.
This promises to be an exciting voyage with some very interesting destinations on the itinerary. The Youth Crew all demonstrated bravery as they climbed the foremast into the night with all pushing themselves to their limits and going to bed with a sense of accomplishment and achievement.
Tomorrow we will be coming in to Broome Main Wharf at 1100H to conduct a “Splash and Dash” as we top up fuel, remove some rubbish, and reconstitute before departing harbour at 1300H. If you’re in Broome come down, photos please and tag us on the socials!
Watch this space for a recap of our daily experiences. This one is going to be great!

Day 13 – V11/25, Darwin to Broome
And so ends Voyage 11/25. Day 13 was an emotional day of farewells but also full of positive reflection on what was an incredible voyage. Each and every one of our Youth Crew thrived during their personal journey of self discovery and development. We sailed over 700NM visiting iconic destinations in the Kimberley like; King Georges River, Bigge Island and Crocodile Creek. We set every sail we have including the rarely used Fishermans and Main Gaff Topsail - these sails truly cut a majestic profile as we glide across the deep blue.
More importantly though, we maximised every moment of our 288 hours together. A journey of Crisis, Transition and Arrival; IYKYK.
The creativity and positive reinforcement that the Youth Crew demonstrated amongst themselves made our job simple as Staffies. Command Day saw a very high strike rate of tasks complete and some of the performances were nothing short of inspiring. This Youth Crew were so fantastic that they actually challenged us, as the custodians and executors of this development program, to think of ways to draw more out of each opportunity.
The debrief and reflection activities teased out some profound insights which I hope our Youth Crew will take with them as they return to their communities throughout Australia. These Young Australians are going to positively influence those around them in the years to come and myself and the crew are proud to have helped to prepare them to do this and encourage them on their way.
Fair winds shipmates! When you see us coming over the horizon be sure to come down and say A'hoy. It was a pleasure sailing with you.
Now for a couple of days at anchor in Broome as we prepare for Voyage 12/25 and the next leg of this incredible Circumnavigation of Australia adventure. I can't wait to welcome our next group of Young Australians onboard and sail the high seas for Exmouth.
