ANCHORED AT RYE

Ahoy Shipmates,After a busy night the Youth Crew were again on deck at 0630 this morning in preparation for a busy morning. Following breakfast, morning brief and a very quick set of cleaning stations the anchor was weighed and in perfect conditions Young Endeavour completed a very successful sail from anchor. Once clear of the anchorage the ship was brought under a modified sail plan in preparation for Captains setting and furling drills. During the rest of the morning these drills were completed with each of the watches demonstrating that they were both competent and safe in setting and furling procedures. On completion of this activity all sail was handed in and we shaped a course back to our previous night’s anchorage. During this passage I initiated a Man Overboard Exercise (MOBEX) ), which besides providing valuable training for the Staff Crew it also gives the YC an appreciation of the quick responses required by all crew to quickly hand in all sail, manoeuvre the ship and recover a person from the water. Once this exercise was complete the ship continued the short distance to her anchorage coming safely to anchor at 1215. Early afternoon saw us ferry all of the YC ashore to Rye were they enjoyed their first taste of civilisation for the voyage. Whilst ashore they took the opportunity to enjoy a much craved fast food fix, browse through the boutique shops or just laze and swim on the white sands of Rye beach. By late afternoon we had ferried everyone back onboard so that they could enjoy another swim from the ship which was followed by an enjoyable “teak deck” BBQ. This evening the YC were briefed on the purpose and aims of command day and held elections to determine which of them would serve in leadership positions. Being at anchor provides the YC with the opportunity to develop plans on how they hope to achieve the mission that they have been assigned as well as the chance to catch up on some much needed rest prior to what will prove to be a very demanding and tiring 24 hours.Until tomorrow, take care.Yours AyeCaptain GavÂ
