Fluctuating
Ahoy there Shipmates, Overnight the ship remained at sea on passage to Jervis Bay. The wind fluctuated a bit through the middle and morning watches. We were motor-sailing with the fore and main staysails set and at times had to come off engines as the apparent wind speed approached the maximum for those sails, in order to ensure they were not damaged. We entered Jervis Bay at 0730, anchoring off Vincentia at 0830. After morning brief we launched the boat and put the youth crew ashore on the beach to enjoy some organised sport, the chance for a break from the Ship and a walk along the beautiful Jervis Bay white sandy beach or a swim for those who could brave the cold water. Everyone was back onboard by 1130 and we then recovered the boat with youth crew assistance. After lunch the Staffies weighed anchor, set some sails and motor-sailed out of the bay. Once we had conducted today’s edition of Ropies, we turned northwards we commenced some practical coastal navigation training run by Navigator Adam. The wind was too strong for us to carry the Jib once we were clear of Jervis Bay, but the wind eased as we approached Kiama so we then set the Jib and the Mainsail and conducted Demonstrational Tacks. During this the Ship undertakes a series of tacks with a two youth crew from each watch on the bridge observing. This way the youthies gain an understanding of how we do it. The intention is to remain at sea overrnight continuing to consolidate sail handling experience as well as undertaking the self-reflection and self-awareness activity we call ‘Apples and Onions’. The Ship will be in the approaches to Broken Bay at first light tomorrow. Until tomorrow, take care. Yours AyeCaptain Mike

Thank you Tarvi, Kaeden and Matt for your narrative of today's events. Intentions are to remain at anchor in Hunters Bay, just off HMAS Penguin, home of the RAN Diving School, a place close to my heart, having spent many a day there under training as a young Officer! The plan is to weigh anchor and proceed to HMAS Waterhen, in Waverton, to pick up our Community Day Sailors from the Windgap Foundation and take them for a sail around the harbour for 3 hours. The Youth Crew will help us host our visitors and give them an experience of Young Endeavour. We will drop them back to Waverton and then proceed to anchor in the harbour where we will have a good view of the Bridge and the Opera House for the Youth Crew's last night onboard. Until tomorrow. Yours Aye, Captain Mike
