Day Two – Entered Bass Strait
Hi Everyone,
Welcome to day two of our voyage. The Youth Crew were awoken by a catchy Paul Simon song at 0630 this morning for their first Early Morning Activity (EMA) onboard Young Endeavour. A quick shower and breakfast followed then everyone mustered back on deck for safety aloft briefs and first climbs of the foremast. These climbs took just over three hours to complete but during this time all of the Youth Crew managed to safely make it to the topgallant yard (highest yard) which was a major achievement.
Lunch followed then just before midday we weighed anchor and commenced our 18nm pilotage out of Port Phillip Bay via the Western Channel. During this pilotage the Youth Crew conducted sail setting and furling drills and consolidated deck safety procedures.
At 1500 in light conditions we safely transited through the infamous Port Phillip Bay ‘Rip’ and entered an unusually calm Bass Strait.
As forecast the wind strengthened to 20kts late this afternoon which enabled us to complete our first set of tacks as a crew which successfully completed all of today’s activities.
The time is now 2000 and we are located 10nm to the south east of Cape Schanck sailing on a beam reach under fore and aft sail and making good a boat speed 7.0kts. Given the current forecast of strong south westerly winds we will make good speed across Bass Strait with the Youth Crew enjoying some exciting sailing.
Until tomorrow evening, take care.
Yours Aye
Captain Gav

Thank you Tarvi, Kaeden and Matt for your narrative of today's events. Intentions are to remain at anchor in Hunters Bay, just off HMAS Penguin, home of the RAN Diving School, a place close to my heart, having spent many a day there under training as a young Officer! The plan is to weigh anchor and proceed to HMAS Waterhen, in Waverton, to pick up our Community Day Sailors from the Windgap Foundation and take them for a sail around the harbour for 3 hours. The Youth Crew will help us host our visitors and give them an experience of Young Endeavour. We will drop them back to Waverton and then proceed to anchor in the harbour where we will have a good view of the Bridge and the Opera House for the Youth Crew's last night onboard. Until tomorrow. Yours Aye, Captain Mike
