Day Seven – Port Arthur

Hi Everyone,
Welcome to day seven of our voyage. By Sunrise this morning we were located 12nm to the north of Tasman Island now sailing under a full press of sail in light to moderate NNW winds.

At 0900 we conducted a short morning brief then everyone brought out their cameras to take some memorable photographs of the spectacular scenery as we passed through the narrow passage between Cape Pillar and Tasman Island.

Once through this passage we entered Storm Bay where we were greeted by a long rolling 2m swell with strengthening northerly winds. Given these conditions we clewed up the squares, came hard onto the wind and conducted Captains Setting and Furling Drills with all watches successfully passing this important activity.

Lunch followed then in surprisingly lighter than forecast conditions we conducted a good set of Demonstrational Tacks. With this activity completed we shaped a new course for Port Arthur which was at this time located 9nm to the north.

During this passage to Port Arthur I conducted the Command Day Brief which was quickly followed by Command Team elections.

Late this afternoon we entered Port Arthur coming safely to anchor just to the east of old Penal Colony at 1710. Once at anchor the Youth Crew proceeded aloft and put seafurls on the squares then once completed we enjoyed a teak deck BBQ dinner. Once we had cleaned up from dinner the crew were ferried ashore so they could enjoy the famous Port Arthur Ghost Tour which we had pre-arranged prior to our arrival.

On their return onboard later this evening they will settle into anchor watches overnight ensuring that they are well rested for the commencement of tomorrows 24hr Command Period.

Until tomorrow evening, take care.

Yours Aye

Captain Gav
