Day One – Voyage 04-16 Underway

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to Young Endeavours forth voyage for 2016. This voyage will see us spend the next 11 days sailing from Hobart to Melbourne and along the way experiencing some of the spectacular Tasmanian and Victorian coastlines and the infamous Bass Strait.

The YOUNG ENDEAVOUR Staff Crew for this voyage are as follows:
Captain – Gav
Sail Master – Dion
Navigator – Kyle
BOATSO – Matt
Red Watch Leader – Evan
White Watch Leader – Taff
Blue Watch Leader – Kenny
Chef – Marcus
Engineer – Horto

The voyage commenced at 1500 today when the new Youth Crew joined Young Endeavour berthed at Elizabeth Pier, Hobart. Once all gear had been stowed, everyone mustered on deck for my welcome address followed by Staff Crew introductions. With these formalities complete we farewelled family and friends then got straight into a safety brief prior to our departure.

At 1545 we cast-off lines then transited the short distance over to Bellerive Beach where we came safely to anchor at 1610. Once at anchor the Watch Leaders completed ship tours and some ‘ice breaker’ activities. The first of many very tasty dinners crafted by our very own ‘Master Chef’ Marcus followed with tonight’s menu being a choice of Roast Chicken, Lamb Shanks, Tomato & Basil Pasta, all served with Fresh Vegetables then followed with a mixture of deserts which included Chocolate Brownies, Fresh Fruit Salad, Ice Cream and Chocolate Mousse.

Once we had cleaned up from dinner, I had a bit of chat to the Youth Crew about what their voyage would entail during the next eleven days. On completion, Dion, as Sail Master, gave his talk about some of the rules, regulations and safety aspects of Young Endeavour before giving a safety aloft brief and a demonstration on how to climb the foremast. Once he had finished this demonstration I inverted all of the Youth Crew in their harnesses, which is our final safety check prior to commencing our first climbs.

The time is now 2330 and I am pleased to announce that first night climbs are now complete with everyone putting in a great effort during this activity. This completes today’s program and after a hot cup of cocoa the crew will now turn in for their first nights sleep onboard Young Endeavour.

Tomorrow we will depart our anchorage, conduct our pilotage out of the Derwent River and into Storm Bay then commence our passage to Melbourne.

Until tomorrow, take care.
Yours Aye
Captain Gav
