Day Five – Deal Island

Hi Everyone,
Welcome to day five of our voyage. By sunrise this morning we were located 12nm to the ESE of Deal Island sailing close hauled under fore and aft sail in moderate 15-18kt WSW winds.

Following an entertaining morning brief where ‘Salty’ explained the nautical origin of the word ‘heads’ we went straight to tacking stations and conducted a good set of rotational tacks. This activity lets the Youth Crew go to the other watches tacking stations and gives them a better appreciation what the other watches do when we tack or wear ship.

Once completed, all sail was handed in and we proceeded directly into Deal Islands, Garden Cove coming safely to anchor at 1100. Lunch followed then all of the Youth Crew were ferried ashore were they were given the opportunity to walk up to the picturesque caretakers cottage, small museum and island lookout.

For the more energetic of the Staff and Youth Crew they continued on a 12km round trip walk to the historic Deal Island Lighthouse which at one time was the highest lighthouse in the southern hemisphere and gives some spectacular views of Bass Strait and a number of its remote islands.

By 1700 everyone was back onboard and following another enjoyable BBQ dinner we conducted mid voyage chats.

To complete the day’s activities the navigator gave a brief on how to keep the ship safe whilst at anchor then everyone settled into anchor watches overnight ensuring that we are well rested for the days ahead.

Tomorrow morning we will depart Deal Island and continue our passage across infamous Bass Strait.

Until tomorrow evening, take care.

Yours Aye

Captain Gav
