Day 7 – Bass Strait

Hi Everyone, It was an early start to the morning for the Crew of YOUNG ENDEAVOUR with everyone awake and on deck at 0630 for an Early Morning Activity followed by a normal YE hearty breakfast. The anchor was weighed at 0730 and in strong 20-25kt southerly winds YOUNG ENDEAVOUR departed Sea Elephant Bay under main engines. Once in open water the ship was brought under fore and aft sail then tacking stations called. During the hour that followed we conducted a good set of rotational tacks which gave the Youth Crew the opportunity to experience each others tacking station and gain a better understanding of the intricacies of sailing the ship. Given the favourable conditions now being experienced in Bass Strait I decided to give the Youth Crew a short break then again closed them up at tacking stations so as to conduct demonstrational tacks. This activity is designed to give the Youth Crew a better understanding of how the ship is manoeuvred under sail and is an important activity in the lead up to Command DayThis afternoon the wind moderated and backed to the NE which provided ideal sailing conditions for our passage across the infamous Bass Strait. Whilst on watch, the Youth Crew have been kept entertained with numerous sightings of dolphins, penguins, pilot whales and a plethora of seabirds accompanying the ship.Overnight we will continue our passage across Bass Strait with the expectation that we will anchor of the northern coast of Tasmania early tomorrow afternoon.Until tomorrow, take care.Yours AyeCaptain Gav
